4 Steps: How to Create a Foundation in Jesus

A baby Christian’s guide to creating a strong foundation in Jesus.

I know you’re probably thinking “what the heck is a baby Christian?” My definition of a baby Christian would be simply someone who is new to following Jesus, someone who just has accepted Jesus as their Lord and savior (great job by the way :)), and is probably feeling like “now what?” Well, welcome friends, you have made it to the right place.

I am so happy to have you <3

Contrary to what religious people may tell you, following Jesus is about developing a genuine connection with Him. This can be challenging in the beginning because you are searching for something you can’t necessarily see.

Step 1: Believe in Jesus.

To get closer to Jesus, you first must believe with all your heart that he lived and died for you. Our God loves us so much that he sent his only son to be sacrificed so that our sins can be forgiven. Seems a little intense at first, but just think about it for a second. Think of the things you would sacrifice for those you love. Without this first step, it will be impossible to develop a relationship with someone you don’t believe to be real. He is real my friends, and so so good. Just wait and see 🙂

In the book of Acts chapter 16 verse 25, an apostle (a follower) of Jesus, Paul, is thrown severely beaten and thrown into jail. (Check out the book of Acts in your nearest bible for the whole story.) After Paul and, a friend of his, Silas were praying and singing hymns, when suddenly there was a huge earthquake. The prison was shaken to its core, and all the doors flew open. The chains of every prisoner fell off. A prisoner woke up from his sleep and to his surprise, Paul and Silas were still alive and free. The prisoner in his shocked state came to and asked the two of them what he could do to be saved as they are. They responded that all he had to do was “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.” It is that simple my friend.

Step 2: Read a little bit of your Bible every day.

Before you start I would pray and ask God for understanding so what you’re reading is clear to you. Start small and for 15 minutes read your Bible. There is a Holy Bible app that has saved my life literally. You can read the Bible anywhere at any time as long as you have your phone. There are so many different versions of the bible the app offers. I would start with CEB, NIV, or NLT. There is also an easy-to-read version that breaks everything down for you in a way you can’t miss anything. All these versions are beginner friendly and super easy to understand.

Step 3: Pray

There are so many different resources that will teach you how to pray. If I were you, I would start by just starting a conversation. God knows your heart and your true intentions, so no small effort goes unnoticed. Introduce yourself, or start by asking him questions. You could write your prayers if that makes you feel more comfortable. There are prayers already written in the Bible such as the Our Father prayer. No matter which you choose, it is the effort that matters most to God.

Step 4: Give

Now, this one may be hard depending on your situation or heart posture. Proverbs 18:16 says that a generous person will prosper, and whoever refreshes other people will be refreshed. God has given us everything that we have, who are we to be selfish in what we have been given? It is better to give than to receive. I always feel closest to God when I am able to give to people. It is also important to give wholeheartedly and not expect anything in return. The more you give the easier it will become.

After accepting Jesus as your Lord and savior, believing it with all your heart, setting time aside to spend with Him (in His word and prayer), and giving to others, you my friend, are well on your way in establishing a solid foundation in Christ.

It is time to celebrate such a wonderful thing you’ve done, all the Heavens are rejoicing with your victory. Be glad, it will only get better from here.

Now that you have created a foundation in Jesus, check out what he wants from us!
